I WATCH HER SLEEP. What I don’t do is close my eyes for even a moment. I have to figure out how to keep her as my own. We can’t run away and elope; her dancing is too important to do that. I don’t think that her father, Kirill, would kill me—we’d have to disappear while he cooled off because he would be fucking pissed.

There is only so much that I can get away with in my position, and taking a contracted woman as my own is not one of those things. The results of our union, of our laying together the way we are right now are deadly. I scrub my hand down my face and let out a sigh. My phone dances on my nightstand and I silently curse at the name on the screen.

Disengaging from Kiska, I grab it and roll out of bed, hurrying toward the living room before I answer it.

“Skumin,” I murmur as I close the bedroom door and make my way toward the windows that look out over the city.

“She’s good?”

I grunt. “You’re calling me at eleven in the evening, California time, to check up on her? Don’t feed me that,” I chuckle.

“Haleigh worries,” Maxim grunts, another truth laced with a lie. I wait for him to continue and he does. “There are murmurings.”

Closing my eyes, I wrap my hand around the back of my neck and squeeze. “For what it’s worth, you are a much better match than Entin. I never liked the little prick,” he grunts.

I laugh and lift my head to look at the city lights again. They are endless, and I wonder if me and Kiska are the same? If we will find our happily ever after ending or if we will be like these lights—forever searching.

“How do I make this work without losing my head or Kiska losing hers?”

Maxim hums before he speaks. “Akim Entin is a shit. A dumb shit. He’ll be there for her performance, and he’ll visit your stable I’m sure since he enjoys his hookers. He also enjoys his blow, drinks, and his clubbing.”

“How in the fuck did Kirill pick him for his daughter? Does he not love her?” I ask.

Maxim chuckles before he speaks. “I can’t speak for Kirill, but Akim’s family is good, and in three years, he may grow up and out of it. Then again, there’s you.”

“No way, no way in hell would he sign a contract, allow an engagement, and then be okay with me stepping in.” Maxim only hums, but I let out a sharp laugh. “The fuck would do that, wouldn’t he?”

“Entin’s family might be good, but he is not a California or New York Bratva man. He has zero accomplishments for the organization. You have done more than can be repaid, and I’m not talking about only money. I know you had some hefty sums transferred into your accounts. How do you feel about her? She’s been there, under your watch for a few months now.”

“Konny, baby, who are you talking to?” Kiska asks as she wraps her arms around me from behind.
